Determining each defendant’s individualized needs is absolutely essential to successful
programming, treatment, and rehabilitation efforts, which is why I want to prioritize
individualized sentencings. I do not believe that jail should be the first or even second option for
defendants. Rather, I believe that defendants should be provided with the appropriate
programming and resources to effectively rehabilitate themselves back into the community
where they would not be a repeat offender. Change happens at the District Court level; I have
seen it happen and believe in it wholeheartedly. A judge has the responsibility to understand that
it is more than just a case.
